The Culpepper Flag commemorates the Culpepper Minutemen, a militia originally formed in 1775 in the Culpeper, Virginia district. These men, like other colonial minutemen, drilled in military tactics and were prepared to respond “at a minute’s notice.” In 1860, the Culpepper Minutemen were reestablished under the same oak tree where the original unit organized, carrying the same rattlesnake flag. They later became part of Company B, 13th Virginia Infantry, serving in the Confederate States Army throughout the Civil War.
